Isaiah's feet have always been thick.  When he was a baby there were

a few types of soft shoes that he could wear, but by the time he hit 2

we were searching high and low for shoes that his feet would fit into.

In the winter I had soft leather shoes made especially for him.  In the

summer he wore crocs because that's all we could find that would fit.

His first mom and I both found one pair of regular sneakers that fit last

summer so that was cool, but I think that will be impossible this year.

I've noticed that he's been wearing his soft leather shoes from 2 winters

ago because they are easy to pull on and run outside in.  I figured they

had just stretched, until yesterday when he put on his crocs from last year

and they still fit him exactly the same length wise.  His feet really haven't grown

at all length wise, but they have gotten thicker judging from the way

his shoes fit.

His feet have always grown proportionately in the past, so this is a little

unusual.  I'm not terribly concerned because his feet function well, but

buying shoes is going to be really fun since now crocs aren't tall enough

from the insole to the top of the shoe.

I wondered if Isaiah was alone in this issues, or if anyone else has experienced

the same thing.

Let me answer this in about a year. haha. I know that is no help to you. I think all my babies have pretty thick feet (I don't know how they compare to other babies). When Kyle starts walking and loosing his babish looks I will probably be able to give you a better answer. His feet do seem thick and short but like I said I don't think they are too different than my girls'.

This is kind of a tangent but has anyone ever done an x-ray of hands and/or feet. I would be curious to see the bone structure of Ky's toes and wonder if they will ever present a problem.

Sorry Shannon D. Hope you find something to cover his little [thick]  feet. ;)

Isaiah's feet are still like really fat baby feet.  They are super cute, but they don't make shoes for fat baby feet on a 4 year old, lol.

I'm going to ask the doc to x-ray them, just to make sure the bones and growth plates are ok.  As long as it's just a shoe issue we'll make do, I can always get him shoes that are made to be worn with braces if nothing else.  They are deeper than regular shoes.

Thats so funny you brought that up! I was just talking to my mom the other day about how Tays feet are growing so slow. She is 13 months now and is just now in size 3 shoes. I got away with her wearing her new born socks up untill 9 months old. Kinda weird, but it has not slowed her down at all. She is running all over the place.  She has super thick feet also and the leather slippers seem to work the best on her.

Celeste has very small feet she also has no toes on either foot. As for the

growth of her bones they have been fine but she just has small thick

feet we have had a very hard time with finding shoes. What Dornbechers

children s hospital has done for her is the made some inserts that filed up

the end where her toes would be so that she can have shoes that fit the

with of her feet. Now the problem with that has been getting her to put them in and keep them in. One more problem that we are now having is that at age 13 her

weight is causing her feet to split and tear between where her toes would

be. This happens mainly if she dose a lot of running ect. So far we have not come up with any answers. Her shoe size that fits the best is a child's 9. Her sister at age

9 is in a childs 12.

I'm still waiting on a referral to the orthopedic doctor, but I did find some cute little Nike sandals that fit him great!  I can adjust the depth and the length.  Unfortunately, he wore them once and then lost one, so we're on to pair #2 already!

I wanted to update the foot saga, now that we've had it addressed.  His feet are continuing to get thicker and thicker, and pretty rapidly.  I put up pictures on his blog, if anyone wants to see.  We ended up getting him orthotic shoes,  because my relentless search for shoes Zay can wear was coming up empty.  So far his feet are working ok, though they are getting less flexible as they get thicker.  We are watching them for the next month, and will reevaluate then.

One other interesting thing, is they are also getting more asymetrical, and still not growing in length or width, just height.  They are still cute as pie though :)

I saw the pictures of his little feet and wow! You are right, they certainly are getting thicker. I saw you got him some shoes too! I am glad he is so excited about them. As Kyle is loosing more and more of his babyish features, his feet do remain the same, short and thick, compared to most his age, although it is still hard to tell since he is so young. Most of the shoes he has are sized for a 3 month old and they fit length wise but not thickness wise. It seems odd. Have you had them x-rayed yet? It seems like with so many possibly severe limb defects, having short thick feet is a weird affect. Usually AOS affects are because of an incomplete development of something. How would that apply here? If all the bones are there and formed correctly, maybe the growth plates are affected?

I apparently never read the post about Celeste. So sad about her feet spliting. Have you found any solution to that yet?

I'm guessing growth plates too, but we'll find out.  He sees the orthopedic doc in Dec for his neck and feet, so we'll see what he says then.  Good to know that it's not just him.

And if you didn't see the blog post I highly recommend Keeping Pace for shoes for these adorable little "sausage feet" if you don't have a local orthotic store.  The lady there was SO helpful with helping me pick out the sizes and styles that would be best.  She really knew her stuff, and they ship all over the world.  In fact, my friend in Isreal recommended them :)

My daughters feet are so tiny! She wears 0 or 1 in infant shoes. and when they do fit her they need to have an ajsutable strap cause her feet are so fat. I guess this problem will only get worse? She is only 8 mths right now.

Kirsten has always had small, fat feet.  And now with summer coming, she wants flip-flops and her toenails painted, when her toes are not long enough for flip-flops and she doesn't have toenails.

But when it comes to shoes we have to search and search to find any that fit.  I spend a lot of time at Payless, Famous Footwear and Target trying to find anything that fits.  For girls, Payless has sandals with velcro in two places so we can sometimes get them to fit over the top of her foot that way.  We also had good luck with the jelly shoes last year since they tend to form to the foot.  (They are much better than the ones I wore back in elementary school!)
